Information For Patients

Our philosophy

Drs Harris, O’Connell and Seikaly have the combined experience that comes from treating a large number of patients with cancers and other Head & Neck and thyroid & parathyroid disorders.  Patients that come to the Head & Neck Clinic find an atmosphere that is striving to providing patients with the highest quality care.

Patients and family members communicate with a multidisciplinary team of physicians, support staff and allied health professionals. This team approach is designed to give patients and their families information and insight into all aspects of the care they will receive.

Doctors, staff and patients discuss the entire scope of treatment as well as beyond – from diagnosis to surgery, reconstructive procedures, follow-up care, and quality of life implications.

We listen to patients’ concerns carefully. All of us involved in each individual patient’s case and take his or her specific needs and desires into consideration when designing treatment, rehabilitation, and follow-up plans.

Quality Of Life

Our philosophy goes beyond helping patients in their battle to beat cancer. Our goal is to do everything possible to help patients treated at the Head & Neck Clinic to have the best quality of life, living as fully and functionally as possible in the years following their treatment.

Restoration and reconstruction of the different areas affected by cancer are a part of the treatment plan from the initial consultation. We recognize that patients have significant concerns regarding how they will look, feel, and function following their treatment.

The multidisciplinary treatment team is made up of specialists in otolaryngology (Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery), Head & Neck Surgery, Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery, Maxillofacial prosthodontics and facial aesthetic surgery. Expert nutritional counseling, pain management as well as speech and swallowing therapy is incorporated into your rehabilitation following surgical treatment.

Each member of our treatment team is equally important in ensuring patients the best treatment outcomes. All member of the team understand their and everyone else’s role in treatment and rehabilitation which is one of the main reasons we have had such a high rate of successful outcomes, even in the most challenging of cases.

Continuing Follow-Up

Typically patients diagnosed with a Head & Neck Cancer and are treated by a member of the Head & Neck Clinic will have regular follow-up visits. In the first two years following treatment patients are seen every 3 months. For years 3 and 4 it is every 6 months, then every year following.

Typically patients diagnosed with Thyroid Cancers will have 1 or 2 arranged follow-up visits after their surgery. In certain cases patients will have their follow-up arranged through the Thyroid Cancer Clinic at the Cross Cancer Institute, in other cases the follow-up will be coordinated with your primary care physician (family doctor) and the doctors at the Head & Neck Clinic.
